Park ended an up-and-down week with a big win Saturday, knocking off Mounds View/Irondale 5-1 at the NSC Super Rink.
The game was tied 1-all after the first period, but the Wolfpack won the next two periods by identical 2-0 counts to earn the victory.
Park improved to 2-1-1 on the season and to 2-0 in the Suburban East Conference. Mounds View/Irondale fell to 0-3 in the league and 1-3 overall.
Junior defender Keira Brennan scored twice for the Wolfpack, while Alaina Post, Addie Corkish and Josie Leonard all put the puck in the back of the net. Corkish’s goal was on a power play, something the Wolfpack have struggled with a bit early in the season.
Alyssa Hill, Natalie Post, Alaina Post and Stella Daly had assists for Park.
Junior goalie Alayna Adamez stopped 20 of 21 shots to earn the net victory.
Mounds View/Irondale outshot Park 27-21.
Park 2, Eastview 2 (overtime)
Park girls' hockey fans leaving Thursday’s home ice meet up with visiting Eastview could be excused if they thought they had seen this movie before.
Eastview scored the game-tying goal with just 2:02 to play in regulation and the game went into overtime. With 4:09 to play in the extra period, the Wolfpack gained a 5-3 advantage when two Eastview players went to the penalty box, but Park couldn’t muster another goal despite the edge.
It was a frustrating loss for the Wolfpack. It was also the second time in two season-opening home games that the Wolfpack couldn’t capitalize on a late two-player advantage. Park had a ton of near miss shots in the overtime, but none reached the back of the net.
“The overtime we had a bunch (of shots), we had a bunch,” said Park head coach Bay Shock. “We didn’t shoot on the 5-on-3. So, we’ve got to get the puck to the net on that. That’s two games in a row at home that we’ve had the 5-on-3’s and didn’t capitalize.
“I think the first period we just didn’t play very well and we played well in the second, played well in the third but (we’ve) got to find a way to score,” Shock continued. “And then the opportunity came in overtime again on that 5-on-3. It was just there. You’ve got to learn how to win.”
Eastview scored first to open the game, but Park’s Addie Corkish drove in a tying goal in the first period. Park then went up 2-1 on Lauren’s Tait’s second period even strength score. That’s where the game stood most of the game until Eastview’s dramatic late score sent it into extra ice time.
Alayna Adamez went the distance in the net again for Park, stopping 24 of 26 shots. Park outshot the visitors 41-26.
Ava Taschner and Josie Leonard earned assists for the Wolfpack, now 1-1-1 on the season.
Park 5, White Bear Lake 2
The Wolfpack bounced back from a season-opening loss with a strong 5-2 win over host White Bear Lake Tuesday.
Park scored three times in the opening period to take early control of the game. White Bear Lake closed to within 3-2 in the second period, but a power play score by sophomore forward Addie Corkish gave the Wolfpack some breathing room.
Corkish scored twice for the Wolfpack. Natalie Post, Nora Thurmes and Lauren Osland each put in a goal.
Junior goalie Alayna Adamez stopped 18 of 20 shots in the net for the Wolfpack.
Park hosts South Washington County rival Woodbury (2-0-1) Friday, Nov. 22, starting at 7 p.m.
