Led by some strong doubles play, Park capped a big week in tennis with four wins in the team’s last five matches.
In a busy week last week, Park defeated Two Rivers 6-1 Monday, dropped Cretin-Derham Hall 5-2 on Tuesday, lost to Mounds View 7-0 on Thursday, then edged Harding/Como Park 4-3 and dropped Glencoe-Silver Lake 4-3 on Saturday.
“We had a fantastic week of tennis, winning four of our last five matches,” said Park head coach Tony Townsend. “The one loss was to the second team in the state (Mounds View). “The girls are starting to believe in themselves and are out working their opponents. We are winning the close matches and have improved significantly with our mental toughness and ability to compete. I am so proud of their fight and determination.”
Park’s top doubles team of Liv Evans and Madi Brinkman went 4-1 during the week, winning matches by scores of 6-4, 6-4; 6-4, 6-2; 7-5, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-0. The pair are 9-3 on the season.
Evans and Brinkman also won 6-3, 7-5 on Monday afternoon against South St. Paul.
“I would say what’s working is us being up at the net and really being aggressive and poaching the ball, and just getting those balls deep to deep because a lot of teams when we get up there and they can’t stop us when we’re at the net,” said Brinkman.
“I think we’re hoping to make it farther and grow as a team and maybe make it to state,” said Evans. “I feel like we have a pretty good shot. I think confidence and keep fighting and pushing through all the tough matches.”
Park’s Emery Lettner and Chloe Newhouse at No. 3 doubles also had a strong week, going 4-1 and sweeping all eight games in their four match wins.
At No. 2 doubles, Ava Youngquist and Keira Brennan went 2-3 on the week.
In singles play during the week, Grace Townsend went 2-3 at No. 1 singles, Pasia Pitkanen was 1-4 at No. 2 singles, Camilla Brooks was 3-2 at No. 3 singles and Lauren Osland was 3-2 at No. 4 singles.
Park had a rough outing against Mounds View and failed to win a game. But that was overshadowed by the Wolfpack pulling out a pair of 4-3 wins and 5-2 and 6-1 victories.
Park plays at Woodbury Thursday, then is at St. Anthony Village Monday, Sept. 23.
