Trailing by a 3-2 count with three minutes to play, Park had a golden opportunity to score and tie, but it was not to be.
The host Wolfpack dropped a tough 3-2 decision to visiting Apple Valley in the girls' hockey season opener Thursday at the Cottage Grove Ice Arena.
The Wolfpack had a two-person advantage for two of the final three minutes as two Apple Valley skaters were sent to the penalty box for infractions. But the Wolfpack couldn’t manage to find the back of the net despite the advantage.
It was a frustrating way to lose, especially in a home and season opener.
“It’s a tough one on the first game but we had a lot of chances on the power play, gotta score a few goals there,” said Park head coach Bay Shock.
Shock bemoaned the fact that the Wolfpack failed to take advantage of their edge in the final three minutes. “Just how you want it to be written, right? But you’ve got to score. We got a shorty right away but I don’t know if we got a power play goal. We’ve got to find a way to score. That was just handed right there.”
It was the second straight 3-2 Apple Valley win over the Wolfpack. The Eagles knocked Park out of the playoffs in the Section 3 semifinal last winter.
Park led Apple Valley 2-1 after one period, but Apple Valley scored twice in the second to take a 3-2 lead. Neither team could score in the third, although both had plenty of opportunities.
Park outshot the visitors by a whopping 37-15 count, but, again, were turned away on 35 of those efforts.
Sophomore defender Ava Taschner got the Wolfpack on the scoreboard first with a short-handed goal just 1:10 into the game. Senior forward Natalie Post then gave Park a 2-1 lead with an even strength score at 13:33 in the first.
Goalie Alayna Adamez stopped 12 of 15 shots for the Wolfpack in the net.
Park hosts Eastview (0-1) on Thursday, Nov. 14, starting at 7 p.m., then plays a Suburban East Conference game Saturday afternoon, Nov. 16, at Mounds View/Irondale (0-0).
