Going into Saturday afternoon’s game against Roseville, the Park boys' hockey team has been rolling.
The Wolfpack had put up wins of 7-1, 9-4 and 10-2 in three of their last four games.
But all that offensive firepower was absent Saturday as Roseville stunned the Wolfpack with a 3-2 win at Cottage Grove Ice Arena. To add insult to injury, the Raiders scored the game-winning goal with just 57 seconds to play.
Park fell to 7-5-1 in the Suburban East Conference and 13-7-1 on the season, remaining in fourth place in the SEC. Roseville is just a half-game behind the Wolfpack now, moving to 7-6 in the conference and 13-8 overall.
At least one coach confronted the officials after the game to express his displeasure. Roseville was awarded three power plays to none for Park, and the Raiders were called for no penalties to six minutes on three infractions for the Wolfpack, including two two-minute penalties in the decisive third period.
Roseville took a 1-0 lead after a first period goal and that was where the game stood until a wild third. Park tied it on an even strength goal by Eli Daly. Roseville then took a 2-1 lead at the 9:27 mark. Max Kaplan then tied it up again with an even strength goal at 10:37. That where the game stood until the last0minute drama.
But head coach Jeff Corkish dismissed the disparity as a reason for the Wolfpack loss.
“They’re very well coached, Corkish said of the Raiders. “They didn’t give up a lot. They kept the game very simple, exactly what we wanted to do. Their D is to get the puck out of the zone and they use speed to get through the neutral zone. They get it deep. They didn’t have a lot of chances either.
“They got a goal off of a tip and then all of a sudden third period ended up being a scramble up and down and back and forth and it just ended up being some broken plays and then we shot ourselves in the foot,” Corkish continued. “Motions, dumb penalties, just things that we had control of that we didn’t take control of. We had the game in hand and coming back we had the momentum and we just didn’t finish it. We didn’t do a very good job of controlling it. And we have to learn from that because we have to be better with frustration. You can’t always win the game in the first period and we wanted to win the game in the first period and when it didn’t come our attitude and our effort changed.”
Park hosts Woodbury (8-12-1, 4-9) Thursday, then plays at White Bear Lake (13-4-3, 10-2-1) Saturday in the next to last week of the regular season. Both games with 7 p.m. start times. Park skated past Woodbury 7-2 in the first meeting between the two teams this season, while playing to a 2-2 tie with White Bear Lake in the first go-round.
Park 10, Eastview 2
One game after a 9-4 win over Forest Lake, Park rolled to another lopsided victory, dropping visiting Eastview 10-2 in non-conference boys' hockey.
Park has outscored its last three opponents 26-7 in three straight wins. The 10 goals Thursday was a season high for the Wolfpack. Park doubled the visitors in shots, 35-17.
Park led just 1-0 entering the second period but then blitzed Eastview 5-2 in a dominating second before wrapping it up with a 4-0 third period.
The Wolfpack led 6-2 after two periods.
Senior forward Gavin Moss scored a hat trick with three goals and Gavin Sand wasn’t far behind with two scores. The Wolfpack also got one goal each from Nick Bailey, Max Kaplan, Owen Corkish, Zane Dostal and Michael DeStasio.
Drew Schumacher led Park with three assists. Moss, Sand, Caden Schwartz, Corkish, Kaplan, Malachi McMorrow and Bailey had two assists each.
Goalie Henry Voss stopped 15 of 17 Eastview shots for an .882 game.
Park 9, Forest Lake 4
Park had its highest-scoring game of the season and its third lopsided victory in four games with a 9-4 win at Forest Lake Tuesday.
Park has beaten Forest Lake twice in the last four games, winning by five goals each time.
Forest Lake led 2-1 after the first period but the Wolfpack outscored the hosts 4-1 in the second to grab a 5-3 lead. Park then scored the first three goals of the third period to put the game on ice.
Senior forward Owen Corkish scored a hat trick with three goals to lead the Wolfpack. Nick Bailey put two pucks in the back of the net, while Drew Schumacher, Max Kaplan, Gavin Moss and Brady Siemer had one goal each.
Corkish added four assists to his big night. Gavin Moss also had three assists, Caden Schwartz and Max Kaplan two each, while Schumacher, Nick Bailey, Gavin Sand, Jack Kennedy, Zane Dostal and Michael DeStasio had one each.
Park was 4-for-8 in power plays, while holding Forest Lake to 0-for-5.
