Thunderbolts roll to 5-1 on the season

The South Washington County Thunderbolts rolled to one of the team’s best wins of the varsity floor hockey season Thursday afternoon at Woodbury, dropping visiting Mankato 12-3.

Senior goalie Logan Yannarelly of Park led the Thunderbolts defense, stopping 24 of 27 Mankato shots.

“We did pretty well,” said Yannarelly. “We had a lot of great saves, a lot of great goals. I didn’t expect it to turn out this way since we’re about the same as them equally. I just feel good we managed to get to second place.”

Logan Curtis had five goals and Alex Gillespie four to lead the offense.

“We passed a lot, we had a lot of very good shots and we were running pretty quick,” said Gillespie.

Asked what the Thunderbolts could improve on, Curtis said, “Going after the puck on defense,” and what they did well “communicating and shots.”

South Washington County head coach Jeff Figlmiller could find little fault with the team’s performance on Thursday, however. “Shots were good, passing was good, they had some good passing and shot combinations. Logan was good. I’m excited. These guys played great; it was an awesome game.

“I thought they did everything well tonight, it was a good game.” Figmiller continued. “Mankato was coming in 4-1, we were 4-1, both of us knew what it was like to be winning games and playing well but I’m telling you these guys kept going and going and going and they played really good. Defense was good tonight. Shots were good. The passing and shots was unreal tonight. It was unbelievable.”

The win puts the Thunderbolts at 5-1 overall with two games to go in the regular season. South Washington County now has wins over Shakopee/Chanhassen/Chaska, South Suburban, Dakota United, Lakeville/Burnsville/Farmington and now Mankato. South Washington’s only loss was a narrow 6-5 decision at undefeated Stillwater/Mahtomedi in the third game of the season.

The Thunderbolts host winless Owatonna on Thursday, Feb. 13, to wrap up the regular season.
